Have you ever had the experience of starting to feel like you will never realize your big goals and exciting dreams because you just can’t “get it together” mentally and emotionally? If so, you are not alone.
Most busy professionals, athletes and people on a mission to have a positive impact on the world find themselves stuck from time to time. In fact, sometimes the bigger our dreams and the deeper our talents are, the harder it can be to access our own brilliance.
We may find ourselves struggling with issues that make it difficult for us to achieve what we want out of life.
We may experience:
Significant Job Stress
Insomnia and Overwhelm
And, because our energy and attention are drained by these issues it can be harder and harder to fully enjoy our lives and pursue our dreams.
Fortunately, there is more than one way to gain relief when these issues arise. Talk-therapy and EMDR may help, and massage therapy can help too!
Massage Therapy Can Be a Powerful Tool for Accelerating Healing
What many people don’t realize is that sometimes the best way to get unstuck is to take the time to tune into and nurture your body. And one exceptional way to do that is through massage therapy.
Massage is much more than a tool for relieving physical pains or a special treat to enjoy on vacation. Massage therapy can be a powerful tool for helping you access your best self.
It can help you to feel more comfortable in your body and improve your overall sense of personal wellness.
A good massage does much more than just relax our muscles, it can positively affect the body’s biochemistry and help our entire systems to operate more optimally. In fact, massage reduces the levels of cortisol, the stress hormone in our body, by up to 30%.
This can have a huge impact on our ability to feel more centered, productive and aligned with our best selves. When stress hormones reduce, we simply feel better and have more physical and emotional energy with which to pursue our goals and enjoy the opportunities life brings us.
Research Supports the Effectiveness of Massage therapy
Regular massage can also help us to think better! A 1996 study published in the International Journal of Neuroscience found that just a 15-minute chair massage helped decreased frontal alpha and beta power, which indicates enhanced alertness. Participants who received massage also showed increased speed and accuracy on math problems while the control group, which did not receive massage, saw no change in their performance.
It appears that massage can even help us to ‘push the reset button’ in our brains and be more alert, make fewer errors and respond more resourcefully to stressful situations!
So, the next time you feel like treating yourself to a nice, relaxing massage- by all means go ahead and indulge. It is good for you.
AND, the next time you find yourself mentally beating yourself up because it is hard to handle all that is on your plate and life seems a bit daunting, explore the possibility of letting yourself off the hook and getting a massage.
High quality massage therapy is far more than a mere feel-good indulgence. It is a wise investment in our overall mental and physical well being and a powerful tool to help us unlock our full potential.
Frequently Asked Questions about Massage Therapy for Mental Wellness with the Kali Institute in BLOOMFIELD Colorado
How often should I get a massage?
This is a great question, and will depend on your reason why you want to get a massage, or if you have any goals. Are you looking for relief from pain, discomfort, or tension? Are you looking for a new regular way to invite relaxation and ease into your life? Are you curious and just want to give it a try? The great thing about massage is you can book to your needs. If you are looking for regular maintenance, like a “tune up” for you body and mind, think maybe 1-2 sessions per month. If you are experiencing pain or discomfort, and are looking to use massage therapy as a means of relief, think more often- maybe 2-4 sessions per month. If you are just curious and want to see what its about, try one session and then ask yourself if its something you’d like to adapt it into your lifestyle! You can also just book “as needed”, but it can also be nice to book ahead so you can relax and just look forward to your next session!
What do I wear?
Your massage session can always be flexible to your needs. After all, this is all about you! Traditionally, most massage modalities or worked skin to skin. This means you can choose to disrobe completely and climb under the sheet if it’s comfortable for you. Your therapist will always use the sheet to cover the areas not being worked, and cover completely at the end of your session. If you do not feel comfortable disrobing, it may feel best to wear something uber comfy and soft to your session - (think plain cotton shirts, loose fitting pants, something close to lounge wear or pajamas!) so your body will can easily relax and not be distracted by belt buckles, straps, or something tight..
Can massage therapy really have an impact on something as serious as anxiety?
In a word, yes. Recent research has been very encouraging on the subject. In a 2016 the Journal of Clinical Psychiatry published a fascinating study in which researchers found that Swedish massage therapy was clinically effective in decreasing symptoms of anxiety in people struggling with Generalized Anxiety Disorder. They went on to note that “These findings suggest that a time-limited course of massage may be a reasonable treatment alternative for people with “Generalized Anxiety Disorder.” *

What if the idea of the massage itself makes me anxious?
Although massage can be a profoundly nurturing and healing experience for some people it can also initially cause some stress or nervousness. If you are seeking massage and also healing from mental health issues, you may have concerns about touch, darkness or being in a small space such as a massage room. This does not mean that you cannot benefit from massage. It simply means that you need to work with a highly trained massage therapist who knows how to accommodate your unique needs. Make sure your massage therapists thoroughly review your concerns and needs with you prior to the session, and try to be as forthcoming as possible about disclosing your mental health status and how it may impact your feelings on the overall massage experience. If we work together, we can create an experience that honors your feelings, meets your needs and gives your whole body a chance to find a new level of balance and healing..
What is the evidence that massage therapy helps in the treatment of depression?
According to a meta-analysis of over 17 studies on the topic, published in The Journal of Clinical Psychiatry * massage therapy is significantly associated with alleviated depressive symptoms. Another study published in the International Journal of Neuroscience found that serotonin increased an average of 28% and dopamine levels increased 31% following massage therapy. Increasing the levels of these neurotransmitters significantly helps to reduce depression. Beyond the chemical impact, the very act of allowing oneself to receive nurturing and non-sexual touch from a trusted individual may increase a sense of social connection that helps with the feelings of isolation that often perpetuate feelings of depression.
